NEW FEATURE: INTRODUCING STEMS

Contents
    Add a header to begin generating the table of contents

    We’ve always offered an extensive variety of alternate mixes and cutdowns for our tracks. However, certain projects need additional flexibility to fine-tune the music to fit perfectly. To maximise versatility and utility in our catalogue for creatives, we’ve made individual stems for over 10,000 of our high-quality tracks available for download.

    Shows how to find stems on a Track

    Find out everything you need to know about this exciting new feature below.

    Where Can I Find Stems on Audio Network?

    The majority of our tracks come with stems. You can easily identify them by looking for the stems label on the track. If it’s crucial for you to have a track with stems, you can filter in our Search Tool and find tracks that only have stems, as shown in the video below. So go ahead and explore our amazing selection of tracks with stems.

    What Are Stems?

    Stems in music are created as part of the mixing process and final track delivery. They are subgroups of the full mix and usually reflect groupings of instruments/instrumental sections, as opposed to individual instruments or sounds.

    What’s the Difference between a Stem and a Mix?

    We normally have 5 or 6 stems per track, whereas in a mix project of any given recording you might have 10s or even 100s of individual tracks. For example, a snare drum as part of a kit is a single recorded track, while the grouping of an entire drum kit with all recorded components in one separated subgroup and audio file is a stem.

    Why Use Stems?

    Stems give you greater flexibility and creative control. They are especially beneficial for those who work in branded content. You can adjust levels of key instrument groups to get the right balance in a commercial (vs dialogue and FX, for example.)

    How Many Stems Do We Have Today?

    Currently we have 9,700 tracks with stems. 58% of all tracks have stems and 90%+ of new release albums have stems. We have +80% stems coverage going back to 2018. However, most tracks recorded prior to 2014 do not have stems.

    Why Don’t We Have 100% Stems Coverage?

    Audio Network emphasises the quality of music production, often recording albums with top musicians in renowned studios. However, it's not always possible to get stems when recording at the highest quality. For instance, some orchestral and ensemble albums are recorded tutti, meaning all voices or instruments performed together. These group recordings can't always be separated due to microphone spill. While the separation is adequate for a good mix, it's insufficient for isolating individual components.

    Today, we produce our music with stems in mind wherever feasible. Some projects, like the Classical Collection, still require tutti recording, but from 2018 onwards we have produced stems whenever we can.

    READY TO FIND YOUR PERFECT SOUNDTRACK?

    What Can I Do with Stems?

    To paraphrase our licence terms, users must:

    1. Use stems only for the purposes of re-balancing the audio mix and/or removing separate audio elements of the track;
    2. Not use any individual stem in isolation;
    3. Not combine any stem or stems with other tracks (or stems thereof) or any other musical elements;
    4. Not use the stems in any way which infringes the rights of any third party;
    5. Not alter the fundamental character of the musical composition and/or sound recording, or introduce new lyrical or melodic material;
    6. Report the original track in the cue sheet or other music reporting document.

    Why Can’t I Combine Stems with Other Musical Elements?

    If you combine Audio Network stems with your own or a third party’s musical or lyrical elements, this can create a derivative work. This can be legally complex and may require that the separate copyright owners negotiate shares of the derivative work; agree these terms with the songwriters and get their permission for the treatment of their work; and register the new musical work and recording with collection societies globally. There’s also a risk that such a derivative work may result in the infringement of another party’s copyright.

    In the majority of cases, this simply isn’t cost-effective and would create significant delays in clearing the derivative work for use in your content.

    NOSTALGIC POP PUNK & ATMOSPHERIC ORCHESTRAL: NOW STREAMING

    In the same month that Usher was announced to headline the 2024 Super Bowl half-time show, Katy Perry sold her catalogue rights for a reported $225m and Taylor Swift took home nine MTV VMAs, the artists, producers and composers of Audio Network released plenty of incredible new music to all the major DSPs.

    First up, we welcomed back Scottish composer James Andrew Grant, who treated us to a feast of driving pop-rock in the form of latest LP Dog Years. For a more paired-back listening experience, check out the single ‘Letters From Beyond’ by British composers Trystan Francis and Chris Egan. Creating electronic textures from manipulated piano recordings, this atmospheric soundscape has drama content written all over it.

    Also new in September: Lypophrenia, a collection of emotive orchestral themes courtesy of LA-based composer Perrine Virgile, and Andy Cooper and Marietta Smith’s soulful collaboration I Love To Work For You. Finally, Audio Network stalwarts Jeff Meegan and David Tobin returned with a breezy album of 50s and 60s-inspired pop, entitled Lovin’ Feelings.

    You can find out more about all this Septembers commercial releases below.

    Looking to add energy to your production? Look no further than Dog Days by Scottish composer James Andrew Grant. Ranging from nostalgic pop-punk to anthemic pop-rock, this uplifting collection foregrounds driving electric guitar and pounding drums.

    Featuring solo piano recorded to analogue tape for a more intimate sound, discover a haunting collaboration between British composers Chris Egan and Trystan Francis. With ambient electronics conjuring imagery of frost-bitten vistas, the ominously-titled ‘Letters From Beyond’ would make an ideal soundtrack for melancholic moments, be that in film and TV drama or factual programming.

    Fittingly, the latest collection from The Umbrella Academy composer Perrine Virgile takes its name from “a vague feeling of sorrow or sadness.” By turns anxious, sombre and tender, these atmospheric orchestral themes pair intimate piano patterns with stirring strings to stunning effect, often building to an emotional climax.

    A collaboration between West Coast hip hop producer Andy Cooper and Candi Staton and Kylie-collaborator Marietta Smith, I Love To Work For You is brimming with up-tempo soul grooves and sultry slow jams. Smith’s powerhouse vocals are backed by blaring brass, groovy electric piano, funky bass and swinging percussion. Dig in and some sass to your next production.

    From big band jazz to cinematic soundtracks, David Tobin and Jeff Meegan are two of the most in-demand composers in the game. The latest album from the prolific pairing is Lovin’ Feelings, a 50s and 60s-leaning pop set, taking influence from soul, R&B, gospel and blues. Timeless melodies meet vintage flavours.

    CAPTURING THE REAL SOUND OF HOLLYWOOD, WITH LORNE BALFE

    Contents
      Add a header to begin generating the table of contents

      Scottish composer Lorne Balfe has become one of the biggest names in film, games and TV. He began his career working with Hans Zimmer and has garnered acclaim for scoring such high-profile blockbusters as Mission: Impossible – FalloutThe Lego Batman Movie and Top Gun: Maverick, where he again joined forces with Zimmer, Harold Faltermeyer and Lady Gaga. One of the biggest films of 2023, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, will see him reuniting with director Christopher McQuarrie to score both of the final installments of the multi-billion-dollar franchise.

      Lorne has been nominated for a Grammy, two Primetime Emmys, four BAFTA Games awards and took home the Grammy for Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media with Hans Zimmer for their work on The Dark Knight.

      We’re thrilled that, as such an industry expert, Lorne has curated a collection of the best in sync music for movies, trailers, dramas and games for Audio Network. We sat down with Lorne for a chat about his aspirations when he began his career, the inspiration he gets from recording at the world’s most prestigious studios, and his role as a composer on some of the most high-profile global hits of the last decade.

      Why This Project?

      In production music, orchestral film music is one of the most requested. So I saw this as an opportunity for us to create the definitive collection of orchestral film music.

      Just as importantly, I wanted to give the unsung heroes of the team the opportunity to contribute to a production music catalogue as credited writers and build future value.

      This collective is about celebrating the people that I work with and also about discovering new talent and encouraging the talent around me. I want to help the next generation into the industry – walking them through the stages of composition and production at a high level.

      I wanted to look at each album as its own identity and own genre, and to embrace and progress that sound. With film music, unless it’s part of a franchise, there’s no room for further development. Whereas with this project, it’s been great being able to say: "Ok this is our starting point, how do we progress?"

      I know that the genre of orchestral scoring we specialise in is highly sought after by customers of production music. So I wanted to work with my team to put this definitive collection together with the best partner. To me, this partnership is about growth. It’s about finding the next generation of composers.

      lorne balfe

      What Does Storytelling Mean To You?

      I can be working on totally different styles of music, but it’s the same task in hand: it’s about trying to tell a story.

      I’ve been doing library music now for over 25 years and the one rule I’ve always worked to is that the music has to tell a story. There has to be a concept, and I always think of it visually first and then I think of it sonically. I see myself as a filmmaker and storyteller first and a composer second.

      I began doing commercials, so I'd look at that as telling a story within 28 seconds. I knew that I had to get from A to Zed, and there was a story and a narrative that had to be told in that period of time. And I feel the same with library music. I can be working on totally different styles of music, but it’s the same task in hand.

      What Role Did You Play in the Making of This Collection?

      My role is exactly the same as when I’m doing a film - it’s about finding a tone that works and that helps tell a story. Everyone has their own personal view on what a piece of music should be and if it’s good or not, and all I can do is bring the experiences I’ve had to it.

      So when I'm talking to the team, and I'm talking to other composers, all I can do is try to give them my input and my experience musically, to how I feel it should be. It’s great to push yourself, no matter what level you are.

      I love being part of the creative community of filmmakers, game makers and TV makers. It takes a lot of people to create one single piece of music for a project and in the past there has always been a tendency to keep people unknown. But this is what’s making this project so fun – I’m getting to help mix and produce other people’s music.

      Tell Us About AIR Studios

      I’m privileged enough to have been recording at AIR for 27 years and the same with Abbey Road. They’re iconic studios and they’re iconic for a reason.

      The history in those walls are so deep that they can't not inspire you. And they can't not inspire the musicians they're playing - it becomes a secondary home to you.

      lorne balfe

      Why Audio Network?

      We chose Audio Network because of the passion they have for recording live musicians, which is very rare in the production music industry.

      There’s a purity and an honesty to Audio Network. They always want to make sure that it’s the best possible end result – and that means always using an orchestra and recording at the best studios possible.

      Thank you Lorne for such an insightful interview, from all of us at Audio Network.
